Handmade Nation

Time for a quick outfit post before we descend into music festival madness. This little sunny day number is extra special because I actually made the skirt {crazy no?!}. It all started months ago when I joined a weekly sewing workshop so that I could work on all the alterations for the shop. You see, the thing with vintage garments is, although the cut, fabric and overall idea of a piece may be amazing, there's often an element that is kind of off for a modern day silhouette... like extra puffy 80s princess sleeves or that unflattering mid-calf 40s hemline. Plus, there are always endless alterations. The fabric for this skirt was left over from a gorgeous 70s vintage peasant dress that was tiered {yuck} and simply too long. In fact, my little alteration turned out so well that the dress never made it into the shop {it got scooped by one of the girls at the studio}. It also helps to be petite too {for once!} when you don't have much fabric to work with. I've actually made a number of bits for myself from leftover vintage fabrics which has lead two important developments:

☞ My new commitment to work on only with vintage or pre-loved fabric in my sewing endeavours

☞ The Brit's growing suspicion that I'm hacking dresses just to make a little something for myself out of the scraps... What mini skirts are in right?!

skirt: self-made

First of all, how does it feel to look so fresh and gorgeous like you do in this photo? Wow Ashi, you are stunning. The skirt is adorable and great job on making it. What a perfect pair with the skirt and blouse. Love the idea of your sewing class. I have a lot of vintage clothing that needs adjusting...great idea!! Have fun and tell the Brit hello...congrats on 101!!! Admirably, Dawn Suitcase Vignettes xoxo

I love the idea! I'm ashamed to say I'm not very good at sewing, good for you for taking that workshop! My husband is really good though, I'm started to think I should put him to work, make me a few skirts!

Great inspiration :)

You look very pretty, the outfit is lovely.
I wish I knew how to sew, or even had a sewing machine. I find so many pretty things on charity or vintage shops that would look amazing with some alterations.
Thank you for your comment also! I might be going to Brighton when summer comes, at least I hope so! ;)
